Graphene sponge electrodes, developed and patented within the ERC <\/span>StG<\/span> ELECTRON4WATER, <\/span>enable electrochemical degradation of persistent organic contaminants (e.g., per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS) and are at the same time electrochemically inert towards chloride ions. This enables their application as anode material in brackish streams without forming toxic chlorine species (e.g., chlorine, chlorate, perchlorate). <\/span>The material developed can serve as anode for seawater electrolysis in hydrogen <\/span>electrolyzers<\/span>. <\/span>This work has been <\/span>largely financed<\/span> through the <\/span>European Research Council (ERC) <\/span>Starting Grant ELECTRON4WATER (2017-2023) <\/span>and<\/span> Proof of Concept Grant GRAPHEC (2023-2024).<\/span> The technology is currently at TRL 4 and will be brought to TRL 6 <\/span>in the European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition Grant FOREVER WATER (2025-2028).\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

PFAS, <\/span>also<\/span> known<\/span> as <\/span>forever<\/span> chemicals<\/span>, <\/span>cannot<\/span> be <\/span>destroyed<\/span> by<\/span> the<\/span> available<\/span> a<\/span>dvanced<\/span> (<\/span>waste<\/span>)<\/span>water<\/span> treatment<\/span> tecnologies. <\/span>Our<\/span> t<\/span>echnology<\/span> enables<\/span> for <\/span>the<\/span> f<\/span>irst<\/span> time<\/span> complete<\/span> destruction<\/span> of PFAS<\/span> at<\/span> ambient <\/span>temperature<\/span> and<\/span> pressure<\/span>, <\/span>without<\/span> adding<\/span> chemicals<\/span> and<\/span> without<\/span> producing<\/span> t<\/span>o<\/span>xic<\/span> chlorinated<\/span> byproducts<\/span>. G<\/span>raphene <\/span>sponge<\/span> electrode<\/span> has <\/span>two<\/span> orders<\/span> of <\/span>magnitude<\/span> lower<\/span> cost<\/span> compared<\/span> with<\/span> commercial<\/span> an<\/span>odes<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> its<\/span> three<\/span>-dimensional <\/span>geometry<\/span> enhanc<\/span>e<\/span>s<\/span> the<\/span> e<\/span>nergy<\/span> efficiency<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> system<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
