Protection Level
Hydrogenation of glycerol to 1,2-propanediol
Entity:
1,2-propanediol is a chemical of industrial interest used for the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resins, in antifreeze, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs (flavourings, fragrances), cosmetics, liquid detergents and paints. At the industrial level, it is produced from propylene oxide (derived from petroleum) by the chlorohydrin process or the hydroperoxide process. On the other hand, glycerol is a by-product obtained in significant quantities in the manufacture of biodiesel.
In the Greencat research group of the Rovira i Virgili University we have developed Cu catalysts supported on mesoporous hectorites highly selective to 1,2-propanediol (> 90%) for the hydrogenation of glycerol.
Challenges met
- Petrochemical origin of the commonly produced 1,2-propanediol.
- Revaluation of glycerin obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of biodiesel
Scope of application
- Polymer industry
- Pharmaceutical industry
- Cosmetic Industry
