Grid services from electrolysers
Entity:
Electrolysers require power electronics in order to be connected to the grid as a consuming unit. In particular, electrolysers using VSC (Voltage Source Converter) technology enable high controllability of the power consumed from the grid. This controllability translates into the possibility of offering services to the grid by making hydrogen generation more flexible. Therefore, thanks to power electronics, hydrogen generation could be modified to adapt to the needs of the electrical grid. These on-grid services are primarily related to frequency support, but also include grid voltage support and the ability to stay connected during temporary outages.
Challenges met
Converting the electrolyser into an active electrical load that supports the electrical grid
Scope of application
Power converter manufacturers, electrolyser manufacturers, power grid operators (both distribution and transmission grid).
