Industry Secret
Hydrogen production from wastewater purified by electrochemical treatments
Entity:
An anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer that can operate directly with pre-purified wastewater streams, exploiting the chemical and electrochemical oxidation of contaminants in the anode compartment.
Challenges met
- Current electrolysis systems require the use of highly purified water streams.
- Contaminants deteriorate electrolyzer membranes and deactivate the catalysts.
- Purification systems add complexity and increase upstream costs.
Scope of application
Implementation of electrolysis systems in remote or inaccessible locations, or with limited access to water sources with standard purities
