Experimental evaluation of the feasibility of catalytic thermochemical waste treatment for H2 production

Entity:

The use of catalysts in pyrolysis and gasification processes makes it possible to modulate the composition of synthesis gas and pyrolytic oils, improving their quality. Depending on the catalyst used, the gas production can be increased, as well as the percentage of H2 in the synthesis gas. Eurecat has a pilot plant of up to 4L that enables these processes to be evaluated for the treatment of different types of waste (biomass, MOR, plastics, sludge, etc.), and to estimate gas, oil and biochar production yields and determines their viability.

The availability of this plant makes it possible to offer feasibility study services prior to piloting or industrial implementation, which is very important considering the high investment costs of these technologies.

Challenges met

  • It allows the composition of the synthesis gas produced in the pyrolysis and gasification processes to be modulated, for example by increasing the % of H2 in this gas
  • By accelerating the chemical reactions involved in pyrolysis and gasification, catalysts increase the efficiency of the process.
  • They also facilitate the production of synthesis gas with a high percentage of H2, which can be used as a clean energy source, thus reducing dependence on fossil fuels and, consequently, the emission of greenhouse gases.

Scope of application

Companies dedicated to industrial waste management, with the objective of converting the various waste streams into a source of hydrogen production.

Companies that can use hydrogen at some point in their industrial activities. The availability of hydrogen produced from waste management can reduce costs and make this activity more sustainable.
