High Performance Computing Cluster HPC – JFF
Entity:
The CTTC-UPC High Performance Computing Cluster JFF is a massive numerical computing infrastructure that currently has 3,144 parallel processors, together with a high performance parallel file storage and exchange system with more than 240 gross Terabytes of capacity, for the simulation of Computational Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer (CFD&HT) in general, and H2 phenomena and processes in particular. The JFF can work with open source simulation codes such as OpenFoam, with fee-based codes such as ANSYS FLUENT and with proprietary codes such as TermoFluids (highly scalable and parallelisable for cases requiring high computational cost).
Challenges met
Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations are currently being carried out for:
- Thermal management of elements with high heat exchange (electronic cooling, PEM, etc.). Electrochemical and heat transfer models in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD&HT) applied to the phenomena.
- Numerical simulation of H2 combustion flames at maximum level.
- Numerical simulation and development of digital twin models for H2 accumulation in tanks ranging from industrial use to transportation applications such as aviation.
Scope of application
- Fuel cell manufacturers and users
- Sectors that use H2 as a fuel directly
- H2 storage tank manufacturers and users
- Sectors that use H2 as feedstock where the thermal-fluid-dynamic behaviour is key.
