Mechanical Characterization of Composite Materials at Cryogenic Liquid Hydrogen Temperatures
Entity:
The AMADE research group at the University of Girona has developed a cryostat to perform tests at cryogenic temperatures of 20K at specimen level. The laboratory is equipped to carry out mechanical characterization tests such as tension, compression, shear, and fracture, within a load range of up to 100kN. A complementary non-destructive inspection service using computerised X-ray microtomography is also available to detect the appearance of internal material defects.
Challenges met
- Determination of mechanical properties under service conditions for liquid hydrogen storage (20K)
- Generation of material property charts at 20K
- Analysis of material defects
Scope of application
Transport industry (air, maritime, rail) that uses liquid hydrogen as fuel, aerospace industry, liquid hydrogen storage systems.
