H2 detection systems

Entity:

Solid-state nanostructured sensors have been developed for the selective detection of gases, including H2, CH4, NH3 and H2S. The sensors are installed in nodes, which are linked to form an autonomous wireless network using IoT. These systems are:

  • Robust, as they need to withstand environmental conditions that can be extreme.
  • Autonomous, in order to minimise the need for maintenance and interaction with operators
  • Wireless (IoT technology) in order to minimise the use of wiring and facilitate installation.
  • On-grid/Off-grid: The use of batteries to operate independently of the grid is being studied.
  • Competitive: They are systems with a low cost of ownership.

This technology has been transferred to Spin-Off NanoChronia S.L. for marketing.

Challenges met

  • Selective detection of hydrogen at levels below the LEL, effectively, quickly and economically.
  • Sufficient sensitivity and selectivity for the detection not only of leaks, but also of fugitive H2 emissions.

Scope of application

The products offered by NanoChronia will be mainly grouped into two families of sensor systems:

  • Ammonia and methane for agricultural use; which will monitor ammonia levels within farms to ensure compliance with the law, worker safety and animal welfare.
  • Hydrogen, ammonia, methane and hydrogen sulphide as safety systems throughout the hydrogen chain (production, storage, distribution and use) as well as for use in industrial estates.

However, our multi-sensor systems can be configured according to customer needs.
