Synthesis of catalysts from waste
Entity:
Synthesis of catalysts from waste or secondary sources for their application in obtaining synthesis gas through thermochemical processes (mainly gasification) as a precursor for obtaining hydrogen. They are mainly catalysts formed by zeolites obtained from waste streams rich in silicon and aluminium oxides. Eurecat has developed a synthesis process to obtain high purity SiO2 suitable for zeolite synthesis. It has validated the use of this SiO2 for the synthesis of A and X zeolites.
Finally, it has modified these zeolites superficially to convert them into catalysts used in the upgrading of bio-oils and syngas.
Challenges met
- Starting from secondary sources for the synthesis of catalysts means their costs are reduced, which has an impact on the viability of their use in thermochemical processes.
- This approach also addresses responsible waste management, while reducing dependence on natural resources for catalyst synthesis and promoting environmentally friendly industrial practices.
- The zeolite modification process allows the adaptation of the catalysts according to the desired characteristics depending on the desired pyrolysis or gasification by-products.
Scope of application
Companies that generate or want to valorise streams rich in aluminium or silicon oxides; companies that want to develop new catalysts and/or industries/companies that want to develop or implement a catalytic gasification process in their production line.
